The Deftones wrote a song called “Change (In the house of flies)” and it near perfectly embodies the way I see global affairs.
I've watched you change
Into a fly
I looked away
You were on fire
I watched a change
In you
It's like you never
Had wings
Now you feel
So Alive
I’m a huge fan of big history (http://www.bighistoryproject.com/ ), which is the study of existence in its entirety or the “Big Picture” as some would say. If you look at our earth’s history, it’s gone through several changes over the last 4.5 billion years including, its completion as a planet, the beginning of life on this earth, several extinctions and now its greatest challenge, Human beings. Big history helps me realize how new our rein really is and how human error is inevitable. Genocides will occur, riots will destroy cities and the strong/rich will exploit the weak/poor until we ourselves become extinct.
If we look at today’s world we see several examples of change happening everywhere. It’s happening in Egypt, Libya, London and even here in America. Human being all over the world are becoming aware of their basic rights as Man thanks to the internet and advances in communication, causing uprisings everywhere. It seems to be spreading as well. When I look at America and London, I wouldn’t expect civil strife at such a large scale because my generation hasn’t done anything like this until now, it’s outside our Norm, but sure enough it’s happening.
In London, students are rising up against blatant racism and class discrimination. Not only are black student being harassed, but anyone fitting the “urban wear” category including saggy pants and a hoodie is liable to get noticed and beaten by the police, and that wasn’t sitting well with London youth so they took to the streets in protest of their treatment, as well as the death of a student who was shot in the head by police earlier this week.
American society is going through several changes, social and economic, but an important social change is the gay marriage laws being passed. To me, in such a bigot society, this signals true social change. Other societies won’t see this happening in the next hundred years if at all.
Mock my words, change is happening all over the world and our generation will see thing both horrible and new, but it’s up to us to be leaders to decide if we’ll allow the mistakes of Man to happen again, as Man has done countless times over, or if we will break old habit and evolve beyond our predecessors capabilities.
Nice post, Freddy
