In Sarah Vowell’s world she expands her horizon. She was accustomed to the tiny town in Oklahoma. Her family never left the region to either coast. She’s expands culturally by traveling around the world. Like Sarah, I also left my hometown. I like the change in scenery. Chicago is one of the most beautiful cities. I was already used to Chicago, since I would visit often. Living here however, has definitely brought my life to a new faster pace. Being in the city could give you anxiety. The subways are crowded. Don’t ride it around five if you’re claustrophobic. You’ll be shoulder to shoulder with four different strangers on a bumpy ride. Living in the city has made me more aware of my surroundings. The atmosphere just makes you more alert. In Texas the mood is completely opposite. The mood is laid back and relaxed. Every day in Texas is a chill day no matter how busy you are. It does have its city parts but it’s so small compared to Chicago. There’s less people on the streets and more elbow room. I wonder how Sarah reacted to her change in scenery. If I could guess, I would say she was excited to see new things, meet new people and eager to learn the beliefs of a different society.
