As much as Disneyland is the greatest place on earth, I’d beg to differ. The first time I traveled to Disneyland I was only three and didn’t understand anything that was going on. I had to watch home videos of my parents running around the park excited to bring their two young children to Disney. At that age I obviously didn’t understand the concept of Disneyland until I went again when I was 13. I went with my parents and my younger sister and stayed at the Animal Kingdom. The thing I hated the most about the hotel was the fact that it was so fake and dirty. I didn’t like how artificial everything was and all the actors that are posing as real people. I thought about things way too much for my age, but it disgusted me. I didn’t like the fact that this hotel has been in business for so many years that millions of people have slept exactly where I slept. There are so many rooms to keep track of that they probably don’t clean them as thoroughly as they should. Another thing I hated about the park was the heat. I’m used to Chicago heat, which can be unbearable, but this heat was extreme. It was dry, not sticky, and you couldn’t breathe in it. Every time we would sit to wait for a ride I would nearly burn my thighs on the asphalt.
When reading Species-on-Species Abuse in Take the Cannoli I connected with Sarah when she went to Disneyland. I didn’t understand why someone would travel to extreme heat to stand in line with a bunch of screaming, annoying children. Why pay Mickey all of your hard earned money to hug a sweaty person in a Cinderella costume.
