Fashion Through The Neighborhoods, Staci Lyn.

For my artistic interpretation I want to incoporate fashion into my explaination. My paper was an expansion of my hometown and its culture. There is great history behind Chicago and I wanted to show what it’s like today. There are many subcultures within the neighborhoods which makes Chicago extremely diverse. Other states within the U.S. don’t have a broad culture like Chicago, which makes it easy to split up the neighborhoods by style. Each neighborhood has its own flare which makes it unique and easy to point out which style goes with which culture. I would also like to point out why each neighborhood has its own style and not just a stereotype. The history behind each neighborhood can explain why they have their own fashion sense. Each style will have its own explaination as to why I chose that specific neighborhood and why the outfits go along with it.

The idea I based my project off of was a magazine. I’ve read many Chicago dining, fashion, and travel magazines which gave me this idea. I wanted to spread it out to give the look of a magazine spread. I broke down each outfit with each neighborhood and explained why that style would go with the particular neighborhood. I used a website called PolyVore that gives you many clothing options and templates to make my magazine spread look more realistic. The different neighborhoods and subcultures that I chose to recreate were Wicker Park, Wrigleyville, Downtown, and various street styles. Traveling around these different neighborhoods helped me plan out the outfits better. I wanted the outfits to be as authentic as possible. Once I plan out my templates and outfits I want to print them out and glue them onto a thick posterboard to make it have a more professional magazine feel.
