Parent Relationship- Malcolm Kelly

The Parent Relationship

The young boy in my book titled, They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky goes through a struggle quite often with his father where he feels like he is treated like a little boy which is ironic because he is. He finds himself feeling bad and wanting to prove that he can be just as mature as the older boys. He wines and just about cries at the fact that his father doesn’t give him clothing and basically makes him wear nothing around the village. Though he feels he should have clothing, his father thinks that clothing for boys his age is almost not necessary. His father stated that girls are to have clothing as well as older boys but that children his age didn’t need so. He was also frustrated that his father wouldn’t let him hunt, this all having to do with him being so young. I can relate to how he is feeling because I went through a very similar struggle like this with my father. Growing up I wasn’t allowed to stay outside when the street lights were on until I was about 11 years old. I can still remember not being able to watch television after certain hours as well. I would hate his guts during those moments always trying to defend my case that I was able to do those things on my own or without him having to worry about me. The character in my book was also trying to prove to his father that he is no longer a little kid and that he should be treated like an older kid. This struggle between him and his father stopped just as mines did soon as he got out of that parent son situation.

  1. Good comparison between the book and your experiences, Malcolm. One more sentence would have put you over the 300 word limit. Try to meet that limit for each post.
