Embarrassing
I can remember being in the 4th grade and believing I had a girlfriend. Sharing milk at the lunch table with Krista must’ve made it super official. There wasn’t a day where I would not be flirting with her during recess by the slide. My mom would pick me up after school and would often notice how calm but a bit excited I was. It must’ve been weeks that passed before I finally brought it up to her about my little situation. One day she picked me up early from school right around the time recess was in session. I was sitting near the monkey bars where me and Krista would sometimes go and talk or even just exchange snacks. It wasn’t long before I spotted my mom’s cars across the street in the school parking lot. Being occupied I didn’t pay much attention to it believing it had to be someone else’s car, she rarely if every came so early to get me. Me and Krista began conversing about something I thought was so interesting right before we argued and chased each other with the other kids. After losing my stamina it was as if I smelled my mom distinctive perfume in the air. She called my name and I saw her approaching. She asked who the young girl was that I seemed so interested in and I told her it was my girlfriend. If only my fellow classmates weren’t distracted by her early arrival. She looked at me with raised eyebrows and laughed jokingly right before saying, “Boy you don’t have a girlfriend, I’m your girlfriend”. Almost instantly my classmates looked at me and laughed till no end. I was so shocked and in disbelief that I ran towards the car almost crying.
I recall in the book They Poured Fire On Us From the Sky, the main character was often without clothes due to his cultures theory that young children didn’t necessarily need to wear clothes. He was always in the saddest of moods wanting to have clothes seeing all the other children of other families walk around looking beautiful in their clothing
