I believe that if I grew up during the 80s with the author, Sarah Vowell, we would be good friends due to the fact that we share similar interests. Her mind is complex, to the point where she almost questions everything, although she takes it for what it is. When she thinks of religion, she likes to have her own view on it. For example, Sarah stated that she is a believer, but there was something stronger than her belief in God. I also share that view. The idea of a God leaves plenty of open questions for your mind to wander. I think that we would have interesting in depth conversations about everything and anything, sharing our opinion on subjects such as politics or religion. Another key reason why I believe we would be friends is that she stated she had many friends before, such as the band kids, but when she met the “artsy” kids, that’s where she felt she fit in. “I thought the art class students who showed up for the first meeting of what would become Youth for Global Peace were the most glamorous people I’d ever meet.” These were my exact thoughts when I entered my freshman year and saw those who were adored art. They all seemed beautiful, creative, and daring to me. I would be intimidated, but then realized that they’re some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. With me, I was friends with anyone and I didn’t judge them for anything they did, but that doesn’t always necessarily mean we are going to become best friends. I feel the same as her, because until I met people with creative ideas and voiced their opinions, I didn’t feel so alone.
Sarah would probably be my other half, seeing as we make a good pair besides the fact that I don’t like getting involved in community groups, where as she was involved a lot around her community, whether it be with band or a group concerning Y2K. She would probably have made me feel more secure around an array group of people. I would have learned a lot from Sarah, where she would have learned an equal amount from me.
i like the connections that you made with your own personal life with the authors life. Good post!
