Many people in Chicago, I have learned in my 2 years living here, do not know what it means to eat the most delicious sandwich in the world: the Publix sub. If you were from Oviedo, Florida like I am, however, you’d know what it’s like crave those fresh tomatoes, banana peppers, and provolone cheese. Publix is, unfortunately, a supermarket chain only found where I spent most of my life: the Southeast United States. Their deli creates some of the most delicious submarine sandwiches I have ever tasted. Growing up, my favorite was the turkey sub, with a healthy slathering of mayo. I’m a vegetarian now, but their footlong veggie sub with every vegetable they offer (except jalapenos!) still leaves my mouth watering. Before I moved to Chicago, I would spend afternoons in the hammock in my back yard, reading a good book, drinking ice tea, and eating a delicious Publix sub.
My obsession with Publix subs (or “Sublix” as some people call it) is also probably tied to the many great places I have brought the subs to eat. Last time I went home to Florida to visit friends and family, I got to do one of my favorite (and so typically Florida) things in the world: take a canoe down the Wekiva river and go swimming in the springs. My friends and I saw turtles basking on logs, fish swimming in the clear spring water, and even herons walking among the water lilies. It was the kind of day that someone who loves being in the outdoors as much as I do could only dream of; it was a perfectly sunny day and the water was blue and cool. The best part, however, came halfway into our trip down the river. My friends and I pulled up to a slimy log on the riverbank to eat our lunch. Obviously, we had each brought our own perfect Publix sub to be enjoyed in a beautiful natural setting.
As you can guess, the picture I included is a Publix sub. Doesn't it look tasty? A quick Google search will show you how popular they are, and I am pretty sure hundreds if not thousands of people on Facebook (including, as you might have guessed, myself) have "liked" Publix subs!
